The Benefits of Seeking Stress Reduction

The benefits of seeking stress reduction in our daily lives is to enhance the proper balance in our nervous system.  Life itself depends on two-way communication between our brain and the organs and tissues in our body without having to think about it.  We have two complimentary components, the Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS).  The SNS responds to environmental stressors to keep us alive when the environment can cause danger or harm to us.  The SNS is often referred to the Fear, Fight or Flight nervous system.  The compliment to the SNS is the PNS which responds during times when our needs for safety and satisfaction have been met, so our bodies can enter a state of rest, digest, and repair.  So, in our high stress American lifestyle, we constantly stress our bodies physically, chemically, and emotionally, thus becoming dominant with a SNS lifestyle.  This inhibits our PNS, thus depriving our bodies the ability to properly repair itself, and this in turn leads to physical states that promote the onset of sickness and disease.
